Diamond P Chopper

Back in June of this year, Fred Pickering, CEO of Pickering Automotive Service Group, Inc. in Midland, MI, wanted to do a project that would give back to the community. Cancer, having touched his life many times, found it fitting to commission a custom chopper that would be raffled or auctioned off to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Fred had known of Vinnie through previously watching American Chopper and found out about V-Force Customs through Vinnie’s brother, John. He contacted Vinnie and the groundwork was laid to commission a custom chopper dubbed “Diamond P.”

Not wanting a lot of bolt-on parts, bells or whistles, he knew from the beginning he wanted the paint job to be the theme of this bike. This presented a problem for Fred, since conveying his thoughts to someone else seemed like an impossible task.

Near the end of June, Fred read about Justin’s mom, Laura Barnes, and her long-term battle with cancer. Familiar with Justin and his artwork, Fred scoped out the JB Grafix Custom Painting Inc web page and was blown away by his resume of customers.

On a whim, Fred sent an email to JB Grafix explaining the situation. Figuring it would just get thrown into the delete box, as some crazed fan, he didn’t expect what would follow. The email was sent at 6am that morning and when he got home that night, not only did he have an email but also a phone number from Justin to call him back.

In Fred’s words:

I called him and we talked the first time for a good hour. There was something about him right then that impressed me. What was it? He talked to me like anyone else I have talked to. I knew by the end of that phone chat a person that could’ve had an ego the size of the moon, decided to leave his at the door. And the humble beginning of Diamond P’s paint process would begin.

All through summer Justin and I would exchange emails and phone chats. In late July he sent up a gas tank half shell painted so I could approve of the color. Over the summer, I told him, in segments, how I wanted Diamond P to tell a story through its paint. Honestly, who could remember that much info spaced out over that many months? HE DID. About 40-45 days ago, the first parts would arrive at his shop. From that point forward, every day, without fail, he sent me that day’s progress in pictures, which I have shared on Diamond P chopper website (www.DiamondPChopper.com).

This past week after 40 plus straight days of working on Diamond P, Justin sent me some pictures of the gas tank as it has neared its final design. The pictures were very emotional for me. Why? Because this man had listened to all those requests from months ago and put his heart and soul into this project that is so dear to my heart.

Do Bikers cry? I have rode Harleys my whole life. I have met some of the best people in the world through the bike community. But many times, I have also had to pay my last respects to those same people who lost their fight with Cancer. …So yeah, even a gruff guy like me has tear ducks and they have worked overtime watching this amazing young man use his talent in art and tell the story in paint of this one off chopper dubbed Diamond P.

In all my business dealings, I have never met someone as humble has Justin. For every phone chat and for every email he always finished it by saying, “Fred, in the end, if you’re happy, then I did my job right.” Truly, that is what Justin Barnes is about. Making people happy, doing what he loves to do, paint.

Justin- After the promotion and auction of Diamond P, you will always have your story and I will always know mine is out there somewhere rolling down a highway on two wheels.

Remembering everyone we have lost and everyone who is fighting cancer.
